February 2008

Greetings from Zaragoza in the name of Our Lord Jesus Christ! We just passed the 11th anniversary of our arrival in Spain and we are anticipating seeing more of the Lord’s blessings and ministry here than ever before.

We have changed a few addresses that some or many of you were not aware of. First of all, our home church, First Bible Baptist Church has moved to a new building, so we need you all to be sure that all of our correspondence has the new church address:

        First Bible Baptist Church
        990 Manitou Road
        Hilton, NY  14468
        Number:  585-392-0777

We have also changed our email address as most of you know and you can contact us here .  One more change is that Sue has a new US address for a few months. She will continue to help our middle son Jon to finish his senior year of high school and get settled into living on his own in the States. We beg you to pray for Sue and I as we endure this time of separation, knowing that God’s grace can help us endure this trial with joy. We also want to say a special thanks to FBBC and another one of our supporting churches (you know who you are!) that helped us with airfare to return to the US, as well as all of the other churches that gave us a an extra Christmas offering.

CARIÑENA
I have written in several of my letters about the things that God has been doing in this town.  After several tries without success, José Manuel finally convinced his brother-in-law Manolo to come over to the house to meet me. We had a very tame conversation about various subjects until the war in Iraq came up. José Manuel said, “Jim, why don’t you show him in the Bible where all the conflict in the Middle East started.” Manolo shocked me by letting me show him the story of Isaac and Ishmael. He then further shocked me by telling me that he reads the Bible a lot and believes that it has no errors!!  He continued by saying that there were some things in it that didn’t make sense, like when God commanded the Israelite soldiers to kill all the heathen people including the children. I thought this would be his excuse for not believing, but he surprised me yet again. I explained the concept of life after death as what we must believe to understand the seeming injustices and inequalities of this world, and he said, “Well, that makes perfect sense when you explain it.” He agreed to start studying the Bible with us, and even came to the Zaragoza church one Sunday while I was in the US, looking for me. Please keep praying, God is doing a great work in that family.

ZARAGOZA
In our last letter, I told you about the business group we have had a great opportunity to minister to. Paco introduced me to another woman named Irene, and told her that I was the one who had introduced him to God. This started a long conversation about spiritual things. However, it is no coincidence that since I told you of them, the business has scheduled meetings for four consecutive Sunday mornings. Paco and Dolly are really struggling, knowing they should be with the people of God, but feeling unable to miss those meetings, and even sensing God’s discipline for it. When I had lunch with them last week, and Dolly asked me, “How can we get the chastisement of God to stop?” to which I answered them, “Stop doing what you know is not right.” Please pray for them, that God would give them the strength to do what they know is right.

I would also like to ask a special prayer for the Jehovah’s Witness couple that have been visiting me, Mari Cruz and her husband Fernando. Despite the fact that I have given them the clear gospel many times, shown them that Jesus Christ is indeed God worthy of worship, of their total lack of hope of eternal life without being a son of God, they continue coming. I have had the opportunity to learn from them many of the doctrines that I believe they rarely share outside their congregations and Mari Cruz told me the other day that I know her better than most of the people in the congregation. The truth is that I don’t understand why they keep coming, I should have been labeled a hopeless heretic by now. My only hope is that they see something of the Holy Spirit in me, of His love and grace, which continues to draw them to Christ. Please pray that God would open their eyes to the truth of the gospel, and allow me to keep ministering the word to them. (If you would like to know some of these things that the JWs teach, I have written a summary of our conversations that I will send to anyone who emails me requesting it.)
EJEA DE LOS CABALLEROS
Back in October, I was offered the opportunity to teach American English to a couple of different groups in this town that we have been trying to evangelize for some time. There are two classes, beginners and advanced. In the advanced class, I have been using various articles and books to try to stimulate conversations. I sit there totally amazed and watch as God allows me to have conversations in English about subjects of faith, religion, character and morals with these two young men. Please pray for these two, Miguel Angel and Carlos, that God would give me an opportunity to clearly present the gospel to them. Obviously, we do not have such conversations in the beginner class, but I have really connected with one of the owners who attends the class, Mariano.  We have spoken several times after class; he is about my age and has more or less the same family situation, children at the age of leaving home and the changes that brings to the parents. I hope to introduce Sue to his wife, Maria Pilar, who’s English, is very good.  Please also pray for this couple.

For His Glory,

The Taglialatela family
