| The transformation of China since our first trip here in 1991 has been remarkable. At that time, the infrequent billboards conveyed only flawed communist idioms, the only brands available were from government factories, and an obvious vacuum existed in the hearts of the people. Today, with the advent of capitalism here, there are world-famous brands everywhere, practically no space available for the ideology, and perhaps less room for God. While the obviously desperate are still prepared to acknowledge their need for God or gods, the growing millions of wealthy city dwellers are becoming increasingly focused on treasures that will succumb to rust, moths, and thieves.
