It’s the Small Things

It’s the Small Things

Written by Julie Tsoukalas.

Deuteronomy 7:7-9
[7]  The LORD did not set his love upon you, nor choose you because ye were more in number than any people; for ye were the fewest of all people:
[8] But because the LORD loved you, and because he would keep the oath which he had sworn unto your fathers, hath the LORD brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you out of the house of bondmen, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.
[9] Know therefore that the LORD thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations;

Do you sometimes feel small? Do you wonder what difference, if any, you can make in this world?

It can be overwhelming to see what we are up against in raising our children, keeping our marriages healthy, reaching out to love and serve people in the name of Jesus. It seems like everywhere we look there are people who do not follow God and don’t want to hear that we do.

But even with all of that, we don’t have to worry about feeling small or being small. God didn’t choose Israel because of their size. Well, actually He did- but not because they were the biggest or largest in number. He chose them because they were small. And He gave them victory after victory.

God loves to do things that seem impossible.

When the new church began after Christ’s resurrection, there was not a vast number of people. Acts 1:15 says that those who were together praying were about 120.

120 people set the prayer foundation for what would be the New Testament church. That’s not a very big number. Yet look at how it exploded! God is still using the same gospel they preached to transform the lives of people hundreds of years later!

So what was the key for this little group? What unlocked the power of God in their lives?

They were in one accord. They walked in the ways of the Lord. They sought His face and desired that He would be glorified.

Philippians 2:2 also reminds us to be in one accord, having the same love, to be of one mind.

Even going back to Israel, when they had victory, they were united in their love for God, and their desire to follow Him.

There is power in unity.

It’s a small word, but packs a big punch. Unity means to be united or joined as a whole. The concept of unity for the Christian implies self-denial, reconciliation, love, acts of service, humility, refusal to listen to or spread gossip..lots of small decisions we make every day that affect us in big ways.

There is power in small things. Our choices as individuals impact the whole body of Christ around us. You are just one person, but you have a bigger influence than you know. What you do matters.

What small changes can you make that God can use to do big things for His glory?
