What season are you in? Is your current season one of peace? Healing? Dancing? Mourning? Silence?
During difficult seasons, it’s tempting to make an idol of whatever it is we think will “rescue” us out of that season. The idol of living like a victim is an easy trap to fall into during difficult times, or seasons of long waiting.
In Deuteronomy 13:17, God says, speaking of idols – “…and there shall cleave nought [remain nothing] of the cursed thing to thine hand…”
Anything that is supposed to be destroyed should not remain in our hands. When we keep portions of idols in our hands, we rob ourselves of the blessing of God’s mercy, compassion, and multiplication. We also dance on the line of God’s anger.
In Deuteronomy 30:15-20, Moses sums up choices we have to make:
15 See, I have set before thee this day life and good, and death and evil;
16 In that I command thee this day to love the LORD thy God, to walk in his ways, and to keep his commandments and his statutes and his judgments, that thou mayest live and multiply: and the LORD thy God shall bless thee in the land whither thou goest to possess it.
19 I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live:
20 That thou mayest love the LORD thy God, and that thou mayest obey his voice, and that thou mayest cleave unto him: for he is thy life, and the length of thy days:…
We all go through different seasons in life. In some seasons choosing life may come easily. In others, it is much more difficult. Regardless, in each season – be it the season of Covid, the season of singleness, being newly married, the season of infertility or childbirth, the season of loss or the season of joy, or the season of aging, the season of sickness, the season of success – we have a choice.
Deut. 30:19 says “I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life…” And that “life” God’s talking about? Deut. 30:20 says “he [God] is thy life…”.
Is living like a victim an idol that you’ve allowed to creep into your hands, leaving a stain that feels harder and harder to wash off? God says, “choose life.” Choose to keep God’s commandments, walk in His ways, and love Him. Though His ways may sometimes be mysterious, His promises are merciful. He created us to walk victoriously with His light on our path. Each season we have a choice – He pleads with us to live!
